Domain Authority vs Domain Rating: What's the Difference
By the Link Building Firm editorial team · Guide
Domain Authority (Moz) and Domain Rating (Ahrefs) are third-party scores that estimate a site's likelihood of ranking, based largely on its backlink profile. Neither is a metric search engines use directly.
Why it matters
- Both scores are logarithmic, so small increases become harder at higher scores.
- They're useful for quick comparisons, not absolute judgments of quality.
- A high score with irrelevant links is worth less than a modest score with relevant ones.
- Different tools crawl different data, so scores from different providers won't match.
How to get started
- Use these scores as one input among several, not the goal itself.
- Compare your score to close competitors rather than chasing a number in isolation.
- Prioritize relevance and traffic over the score of a potential link source.
- Recheck periodically, since your competitors' profiles change too.
